Vehicles Used for the Road Test
SERVICE UPDATE:  DMV has transitioned to a new, online-only appointment system for road tests.  You can find the DMV's new online appointment system here.
Road test appointments are now scheduled through DMV's new online appointment system.  You must supply a vehicle for the road test at a DMV office.

You must supply a vehicle for the road test at a DMV office. The vehicle used for the road test must be mechanically safe and pass an evaluation.   If the vehicle you supply for the road test is a rental vehicle and you do not hold a valid driver's license, you cannot use this vehicle for your road test

This vehicle must:

  • Be appropriate for the license class for which you are applying.
  • Have a valid registration certificate.   
  • Have proof of insurance. If using an out of state registered vehicle, you must present the declaration page of the policy which meets CT minimum insurance requirements
  • Be in compliance with regarding tinted windows.
  • NOT have an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) installed if the testing applicant is not required by law to use an IID.
  • Be mechanically safe. Some common reasons why a vehicle cannot be used, include but are not limited to:
  • Illegal tint: Any vehicle with after-market tint MUST have a CT DMV tint compliance sticker affixed to it and the inspection report. See more details on tinted windows.
  • Cracked or damaged windows/windshields
  • Defective brake lights (includes high mount/3rd brake light)/signal light
  • Safety warning indicator lights on the dash board (SRS, ABS, etc.)
  • Worn or Damaged Tires
  • Missing lug nuts
  • Defective seat belts
  • Defective speedometer
  • Defective braking system
  • Any other defective equipment

PLEASE NOTE: If the test vehicle is found to be in an unsafe operating condition, the road test will NOT be conducted and the applicant will be advised to reschedule.
