Expired Driver Licenses

***EXTENSION OFFERED:  DMV is offering extensions to Connecticut residents with expiring driver’s licenses, ID cards and learner’s permit’s. No late fees will be assessed for eligible credentials. Learn more.

Credentials that expire between March 10, 2020 and May 31, 2020 remain valid until November 30, 2020.

Credentials that expire between June 1, 2020 and November 30, 2020 remain valid until December 31, 2020.
 
"REAL ID" IS HERE:  Starting October 1, 2021, the U.S. Federal Government will require anyone boarding an airplane for domestic travel or entering certain federal buildings to have a "verified" driver's license or state-issued ID card, or be required to show additional proof of identification, such as a passport.  Check your license, you may already have the gold star!  See more information about the Real ID Program.  Air travel additional information can be found on the TSA website here.  

 

If your Connecticut Driver's License has been expired for two years or less, you do not have to retake the driving test.  

You can appear in person by appointment only at your nearest DMV office, AAA location, Milford and North Haven Nutmeg State Financial Credit Union, or West Haven City Hall.

Bring your expired drivers license or one (1) form of identification from the primary or secondary list of acceptable forms of identification. Note: Photocopies will not be accepted.

NOTE:  AAA locations, Nutmeg Financial Credit Union, and West Haven City Hall may charge a convenience fee up to $8.00 per DMV transaction.

The fee for a 6-year renewal of a non-commercial driver's license is $72, and the fee for an 8-year license is $96.  A $25 late fee will be charged for the renewal of an expired driver's license.

Note:  If your license is suspended here or in any other state, your license will not be renewed until your license privilege is restored.
