Courtesy Registrations

A Courtesy Registration is issued when a vehicle is being transferred from out of state and the original title is being held by a lienholder and is not present,  a photo-copy of the front and back of the title can be used to issue a 6-month Courtesy Registration. This applies only when there is a lien holder holding the original title.

A registration certificate cannot substitute the requirement.

A Courtesy Registration cannot be used for ownership transfers.

If you have been issued a Courtesy Registration, action is required on your part to contact the organization who is holding the title, and have it mailed to:

State of Connecticut

Department of Motor Vehicles

Attn: Record Updates

Wethersfield, CT 06161

Use this letter to contact your lien holder

Courtesy Registrations are 6 month registrations to allow time for the original title to be mailed to the DMV.  The fee for Courtesy Registrations is 25% of the base registration cost, plus other first time registration fees.  See more information on Estimated Fees

A renewal notice will be sent out 45 days before the expiration date for the remaining months of your registration term. If the required original out of state title has not been submitted to the title department prior to the expiration of the Courtesy Registration, this registration cannot be renewed until this title has been provided.

Once the original out of state title is received the registration may be renewed, and a CT certificate of title will be processed and mailed to the lienholder of record.
