                                      INMATE ASSAULTS ANOTHER INMATE
              AT MCDOUGAL-WALKER CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION IN SUFFIELD
   On Tuesday May 13, 2008 at 10:44 a.m. State Police Troop H in Hartford was notified by Department of Corrections Officials that a serious injury assault had occurred at the McDougal-Walker Correctional Institution in Suffield. Officials from the Correctional Institution stated that there had been a minor disturbance in the facility and that two inmates were involved in an physical altercation during this disturbance.

   State Troopers were dispatched to the facility to initiate the criminal investigation into this incident.

   Prior to the arrival of the State Police one of the two inmates involved in the physical altercation was transported from the correctional facility via ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Hartford for treatment of serious injuries. The seriously injured inmate is identified as Kevin Cales, DOB 07/16/73, and at approximately 10:30 p.m. he was pronounced dead at St Francis Hospital.

   State Police Detectives from the Central District Major Crime Squad responded to the scene and are conducting the criminal investigation into this incident.

   A suspect who is an inmate has been identified by State Police Detectives and the State Police criminal investigation is continuing. State Police Detectives have gathered physical evidence at the scene and are interviewing all potential witnesses to this incident.   The criminal investigation is continuing and an arrest is anticipated.
