Statement of DPS Commissioner John A. Danaher III

I am aware of the claims that were discussed at today’s Press Conference held at the State Capital.  I have had a number of opportunities to review those issues with the President of the Connecticut Chapter of the Black State Troopers Coalition, and I have reviewed similar issues with other organizations associated with the Department of Public Safety, including the Men and Women for Justice, the Latino Peace Officers’ Association, and the NP-1 Union (the union that represents our Troopers).

 

            I have attempted to address, and will continue to address, the issues raised by the Coalition.  Our discussions have been open, frank, and productive.  I recognize, however, that there are times when reasonable people can have professional disagreements about the best way to resolve an issue, and there are some issues with regard to which the Coalition, and I, are currently in disagreement.

            As I have stated, our disagreements are professional and not personal.  I will continue to be open to meeting with members of the Coalition, and with members and representatives of all minority organizations within the Department of Public Safety, in order to discuss any and all matters of concern.  I am confident that we will find solutions to whatever issues confront us. 

I believe that we have made significant progress over the past year with regard to many of the issues confronting this Department, and I am very grateful for the diligent and good faith efforts made by many Department employees who are working with me on those issues, including the members of the other minority organizations I have named.
