Firearm and pistol permit forms and information

  • DPS-129-C: Application for Pistol Permit Renewal
  • DPS-769-C: Instructions to Applicants & Photo Pistol Permit Schedule
  • DPS-46: Application for State Permit to Carry Pistol and Revolvers. (Can be obtained at one of the Pistol Permit locations listed on the instruction sheet DPS-769-C.)
  • DPS-799-C - Application for Eligibility Certificate/Temporary State Permit to Carry Pistols or Revolvers/Non-Resident Permit to Carry Pistols or Revolvers
    • This form is used for 60-Day Temporary Permit issued by your local municipality;
    • Non-Resident Application for Pistol Permit; please email SLFU.OOS@ct.gov for a complete packet
    • Eligibility Certificate for Purchase of Pistols and Revolvers (not a carry permit) please email SLFU.OOS@ct.gov for a complete packet;
    • Eligibility Certificate for Purchase of Long Guns - Out of state resident are eligible to apply. Please email SLFU.OOS@ct.gov for a complete packet.
  • Effective April 1, 2014 you will be required to have either a pistol permit, eligibility certificate for pistol or revolver or an eligibility certificate for long gun in order to purchase firearms and legal magazines.

Magazines and ammunition

  • DESPP-417-C - Magazines and Ammunition
    • Effective April 1, 2014 you will be required to have either a pistol permit, eligibility certificate for pistols or revolvers, eligibility certificate for long guns, or an ammunition certificate in order to purchase ammunition.

Declaration of large capacity magazines

  • DESPP-788-C - Declaration of Large Capacity Magazine(s)
    • Effective January 1, 2014, large capacity magazines are banned by law unless you meet one of the exemptions (Military or Law Enforcement). If moving to Connecticut and you are in possession of large capacity magazines, your options are to surrender them or render them inoperable within 90 days.
    • Retired law enforcement officers or retired military personnel can declare large capacity magazines no longer than 90 days after separation of service.
      • When mailing in the form please make sure to submit a copy of your active credentials or proof of retirement showing the effective date.
  • DPS-416-C1 - FFL Large Capacity Magazine Transfer to Dealer
    • Effective January 1, 2014; Federally Licensed Firearms Dealers must submit this form for any LCM(s) taken into inventory from a private individual.

Application to purchase a firearm

Transfer of All Firearms:

All transfer must be executed utilizing a Firearms Dealer (FFL)

  • DPS-67-C Application to Purchase a Firearm and DPS-3-C Sale or Transfer of All Firearms -
    • Must be filled out and retained for 20 years or in the case of FFL dealers until you have gone out of business.
    • Authorization hours :
      • Monday - Friday: 8 a.m. - 7 p.m.
      • Saturday: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
      • Sunday: 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Assault weapons

  • Connecticut General Statutes Sec. 53-202a through 2020
    • DPS-414-C - Assault Weapon Certificate Application
      • Effective January 1, 2014, assault weapons are banned by law unless you meet one of the exemptions (Military or Law Enforcement). If moving to Connecticut and you are in possession of assault weapons your options are to surrender them or render them inoperable within 90 days.
      • Retired law enforcement officers or retired military personnel can obtain a certificate of possession for any legally possessed assault weapon, no longer than 90 days after separation of service.
