How do I get a permit to carry a gun in the State of Connecticut?

In order to get a Connecticut Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers you must first obtain a Temporary Permit from the town in which you reside. Out of state residents may apply for a non resident Connecticut Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers Non residents apply directly to the Connecticut State Police and can request an application by emailing SLFU.OOS@ct.gov and include your full name and mailing address. One of the pre-requisites for obtaining an Out of State Resident Permit to Carry is you must hold a permit to carry in another state.

How do I apply for a Local Permit (Temporary State Pistol Permit)?

You must go to the Police Department or First Selectman of the town in which you reside and get the application. The application has all the instructions necessary to obtain the permit. The cost of the permit is $70.00, and it generally takes eight weeks to obtain.

What are the minimum firearms training course requirements for pistol permit applicants?

You are required to complete a handgun safety course, which must consist of no less than the NRA's "Basic Pistol Course," prior to submitting the application. The NRA's "Home Firearms Safety Course" and "First Steps Pistol Orientation Program" are not approved courses. Find a list for CT Approved Firearms Instructors.

Live fire is also required. Computer-generated programs, dry-fire, other simulated shooting tools, plastic bullets, air guns or any other alternatives are not acceptable. Students must fire a semi-automatic pistol or revolver. Any questions should be referred to the Special Licensing and Firearms Unit.

Once I have received a Temporary (Local) Permit, how do I apply for a State Permit?

Once you obtain your temporary permit, you have 60 days to come to an SLFU Office and obtain the full State Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers which is good for 5 years. The locations, hours, and directions can be found here (insert link to home page). When coming to SLFU for the new permit, please bring with you the following items:

  • Proof of Citizenship or Legal Residence (ex. Birth certificate, passport, green card)
  • Government issued photo ID (ex. Driver’s license)
  • Check, money order or exact cash in form of $70.00
  • Temporary permit issued by your local jurisdiction

How do I change my address on my Pistol Permit?

A person holding a state or local pistol permit is required by law to notify the issuing authority within TWO BUSINESS DAYS of any change of address.  Persons holding a state pistol permit may change their address via our online portal by clicking here. A change of address may also be done by mailing a letter to:

May I keep my Pistol Permit if I move out of state?

Yes, providing you notify the Special Licensing and Firearms Unit of the change of address, and continue to renew your permit.

How long is a Permit to Carry Pistols and Revolvers good for?

The permit is valid for 5 years from date of issue unless revoked or suspended.

How do I apply for a hand gun or long gun eligibility certificate to purchase?

Long gun and Hand gun eligibility certificates allow an individual to purchase a firearm and bring that firearm home. An individual can request an application by emailing SLFU.OOS@ct.gov. Please let us know which application you are applying for and include your full name and mailing address.
