Fisheries Advisory Council
The goals of the Fisheries Advisory Council (FAC) are to:
- Improve communication between the public and the DEEP Fisheries Division;
- Delineate issues and problems that affect all users of marine and inland fisheries resources;
- Advise both the Fisheries Division in developing solutions to problems and approaches to issues;
- Provide oversight advice to the Fisheries Division on budgetary matters; and
- Advocate for fish and fisheries issues.
Members of the Fisheries Advisory Council represent DEEP, organizations and individuals.
FAC Committees:
Marine Advisory - provides oversight advice for the DEEP Fisheries Division marine programs and projects, including how their goals, objectives, and performance meets the needs and desires of the fishing public with a focus on recreational fisheries issues, such as stock abundance, health, and distribution; harvest management and gear conflicts; fish habitat protection and restoration; and information needs to develop new fisheries or maintain existing ones.
Public Access - addresses maximizing appropriate use of existing access areas for the largest numbers of the fishing public, including both recreational and commercial fisheries interests, especially considering the needs of handicapped anglers and urban youth. The committee also works to develop new access areas.
Public Awareness - functions to keep the public informed of fisheries resource issues, Fisheries Division activities and accomplishments, and the activities and accomplishments of the FAC.
Budget Review - provides oversight advice for DEEP budget issues for the inland and marine fisheries programs as a whole.
Inland Fisheries Advisory - provides oversight advice for the DEEP Inland Fisheries Division programs and projects, including review of how their goals, objectives, and performance meet the needs and desires of the fishing public.
Legislative Affairs - monitors legislative activity and recommend communications between FAC members and their elected officials.
Membership - invites organizations and individuals to join the FAC. The Membership Committee is responsible for maintaining all membership and attendance records.
FAC meets the second Thursday of the month in March, June, September and December. Although meeting locations vary, they are usually held at DEEP Headquarters in Hartford or Marine Headquarters in Old Lyme.
