Connecticut State Troopers Join FBI and Local Police for Community, Cops & Culture Event

New Haven, CT. (October 26, 2017): The Connecticut FBI Outreach Team, Connecticut State Police, New Haven Police Department and Anti-Defamation League (ADL) participate in a very unique event designed to build and strengthen relationships between ethnic communities and law enforcement. This event is intended to raise respect and tolerance for diversity through cultural education and interaction with police officers.

State troopers and local police officers that are first generation US Citizens or immigrants will share a brief presentation about their immigration journey and reason for choosing law enforcement as a career.

Community, Cops & Culture is open to the public and will center on exposing cultural and ethnic youth from around Connecticut to law enforcement officers of multi-cultural backgrounds.

One highlight of the day long educational forum will be the documentary film “Waking in Oak Creek.” The film details the tragic multi-murder hate crime in Wisconsin which resulted in the community uniting to combat further incidents of hate crimes. Two main characters of the documentary will be at the conference for a Q & A segment following the film. Their story is remarkable and proves that education on tolerance has a profound effect on reducing crimes of hate. 

Trooper Jhoan “Sebastian” Cummings will share his story of getting caught in crossfire as a young child in Medellin, Colombia (during the reign of Pablo Escobar) and being hidden by his mother until it was safe for her to retrieve him. Also, Trooper First Class Joungsuk “Jessica” Moon of South Korea, Trooper Anlly Diaz of the Dominican Republic and Trooper Emily Shaham of Palestine will discuss life in their respective countries, immigration and the decision to become law enforcement.
