State Police-American Legion Youth Week

The Youth Week program is modeled after the State Police recruit training at the Training Academy and offers a unique opportunity for these individuals considering a career in law enforcement.  All “Cadet” participants are high school students who submitted an application to attend the Connecticut State Police Youth Academy. The students were selected by the American Legion. Thirty students from as far away as Florida will attend this year’s 2011 academy. This Connecticut program is a mini State Police Academy and is a National Model for the American Legion.

The Cadets will arrive on July 10 and live at the academy until graduation on July 15th. This weeklong program is designed to provide the “cadets” an insight into the training, duties and expectations of Connecticut State Troopers.

During the week of training, all of the Cadets will participate in a variety of mentally and physically challenging instructional sessions, including police patrol techniques and use of laser speed measuring equipment. Cadets will study accident investigations, emergency vehicle driving, firearms training and criminal investigations. 

For five days, the Cadets will experience the daily activities of a State Police Recruit, including physical conditioning, daily inspections and drill & ceremony.

American Legion Officials will be in attendance to observe this model program during the 5 days of training.

Media representative may observe any and all of this training, including daily staff inspections, shooting, driving, water safety, and military drill etc. by contacting Connecticut State Police PIO Office to arrange attendance.
