UPDATE

                                             STATE POLICE RESPOND TO CRASH

                                                 OF A SMALL PLANE IN GROTON

   Today, 11/19/08, at 6:33 p.m., State Police at Troop E were notified that a small plane on final approach to the Groton New London Airport had disappeared from airport control. State Police Troopers, Local Fire, and EMS, were notified to respond to the area to begin a search. Shortly thereafter the pilot of the plane utilized a cell phone to communicate the location of the aircraft and to relay that there were two people on board he and one other who suffered only minor injury.

   The downed aircraft was located by responding emergency personnel. It was located near a fire road between the water and runway at Bluff Point State Park. Both occupants were located and EMS provided emergency care transported to local hospital with minor injury.  The preliminary information obtained indicated that a student and instructor occupied the plane.  

   State Police secured the crash scene. DEP was notified to respond due to fuel aboard the aircraft.  The FAA was notified and is responding to conduct the investigation into the crash. 

   The occupants of the plane are being identified as :

Anthony CALANCA age 54  of New Canaan, CT

Philip BAKER  age 72  of Anawalk, NY

   The FAA will conduct the investigation into this incident.
