STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE DEATH IN PLAINFIELD

Update: Victim Identified

     Yesterday, 09/12/06, at 5:12 p.m. Plainfield Police Department received an emergency telephone call from a lifeline company reporting an unknown emergency at the Basley residence at 58 Basley Rd. in Plainfield, Ct. 

     The Plainfield Police contacted the residence via telephone made contact with a male subject inside the residence who confirmed the emergency in progress that involved a firearm inside the residence with two male hostages one severely injured.  The Plainfield Police Officer via telephone convinced the suspect to release one of his two hostages.

    The Plainfield Police responded to the scene 58 Basley Rd and requested assistance from the Connecticut State Police. State Troopers from Troop-D and State Police Eastern District Major Crime Squad Detectives and the State Police Tactical Team responded to the scene.

    A State Police negotiator established a telephone dialogue with the suspect and determined that the second hostage had been severely injured. After lengthy negotiations the suspect voluntarily surrendered to State Police Troopers.

 

    The crime scene was searched by State Police Tactical Team members who entered the home and did locate one deceased subject inside the residence. The scene was secured and a criminal investigation was initiated by the State Police Major Crime Detectives assisted by the Plainfield police Department and the Windham County States Attorney Office.

The suspect was transported to Troop D where he was processed and is being held on bond.

ACCUSED: BASLEY, Joseph  DOB: 4/7/71

                                     A resident of Louisiana

CHARGE:  Murder,   Kidnapping 1st

The accused was held on a $2,500,000 bond to appear on 09/13/06 at Superior Court G.A. 11 in Danielson.

    

On 09/13/06 a post mortem examination was conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the exact manner and cause of death. The ruling was that the victim died as a result of gun shot wounds and the cause of death was ruled a homicide. The victim has been identified as Leonard Basley age 75  d.o.b. 06/27/1931 of 58 Basley Road, Plainfield, CT.
